We have seen plenty of uncommon products over the years but Roman Town, a PC based game produced by Dig-it Games is one of the most unusual and enjoyable we have seen to date.  When you see kids on an educational game about archaeology for 2 hours and still counting, you know there is some serious value there.

Roman Town is the only game of its kind to the best of our knowledge that allows you to be an archaeologist, managing your team of diggers at a realistic excavation site.  You are you are enabled to uncover 3D rendered ancient objects, take a group of pieces and put them back together again, and learn about a culture which existed so long ago.

It is so amazing how Roman Town helps you exercise your problem solving and analytical thinking skills.  This has been so ingeniously accomplished with fun puzzles and mini-games as you analyze valuable artifacts.  Roman Town takes funFactor™ to an entirely new level of fun never seen before and for extended periods of time that are sure to cause you to marvel.  This is education re-defined with endless possibilities!

While it's great for some people who just want a cursory glance at what a New Inductee is all about, there are many others who have a greater appetite for more information. This section is titled "Additional Details & Perspectives". and will provide you with additional details and perspectives associated with the product or service being featured here.

One of the most important features we discovered with Roman Town is the highly detailed and in-depth presentation of the teaching/learning methodology of the game. An enormous mass of accurate information is used which maintains even the healthiest of appetites for learning while also having fun.

In the public schools, non-profit recreational facilities, and other locations where we took Roman Town, the same message was conveyed by parents and teachers alike.  They had never seen a game such as this capture a child's attention not only so quickly, but to maintain the child's attention for such an extended period of time.


Most important of all, we were dumbfounded to see adults becoming engrossed in the game.  Never did we expect to see a father being petitioned by his son to let him have his turn with the game again!  We will cover more on that later in this summary. Considering the game concept comes from a real archaeologist and scholar, it shouldn't be any surprise to see the responses we did.

I can personally say that it is a published fact that most games, whether video or PC based, generally tend to be played to the end in a short span of time and are soon passed over as a player seeks to satisfy the need for mental challenge and stimulation. With Roman Town you have an outstanding mix of fun and learning merged so perfectly. Instead of kids saturating their minds with violence, blood, and gore, they walk away with more than an adrenaline rush and keep coming back for more...again and again.

"This game is a perfect example of applying the basic physics of art design and animation, pooling it with a good selection of educational content for learning, creating a powerful tool which is applicable for use in recreation and education reciprocally. The artwork is well designed to be native to the comprehension level for the target age group it is intended to reach.  What an adult may see as simple and redundant, a child will see it as a fascinating new experience. This increases the value of the game's functionality in application dramatically"

"Just as with another game I examined some time back, Reciprocal Teaching Method, (Brown and Palinscar) appears to have a strong influence in the learning methodology of the game. Reciprocal teaching method is a classic method for teaching reading comprehension strategies. Children are first shown how to apply the strategies by their teacher who models the process. This enables a much more effective method for learning and effective comprehension.

This is well demonstrated in the game where an object is carefully uncovered as virtual dirt is removed in the game. Upon completion of the task, the screen automatically transitions into another where a character models the process by provides information about the object uncovered and its application to the purpose of use in its time. As the players progress through the game, they then practice application of use and duplication of learning from the examples modeled. The more the child or adult plays the game, the greater the volume of their learning."

Roman Town is a brilliant example representing a merging of solid educational facts and recreational Play with productive functionality. The game has taken a different path with what I see as hosting an immense level of educational information carefully intertwined with encouragement for development of a strong narrative progression.  This approach draws the players in to explore the game for more extended period than most while creating a steady level of growth in cognitive development.

The game has a creative agenda of natural progression objectives which prompts the player to develop a narrative in their exploration of the game with each time they play. A child will implement the use of the narrative to be able to succeed in the goals they have set, expanding their desire to learn and discover more about Archaeology.  As a result, they can take what they have learned in the game and apply it to their studies in school."

Consumer Hands-On Evaluation

Nothing is more powerful than hands-on experience by a consumer with a product when it is under evaluation. Based upon that fact we put a number of products we currently are slated to evaluate at the mercy of consumers in a hands-on evaluation where anything goes. The information to follow will explore the responses from the participants in our spontaneous hands-on consumer evaluation of the products available for their review.

In this evaluation event, it was so amusing when a little girl participating in our hands-on evaluation said, "Mommy, look at the little red stick men.  They're digging for me!" Her mom was a bit puzzled until she came over to the screen and saw the little red colored stick men busy with different tools, working on the dig site. Her mom replied to her daughter with "Oh my gosh, That's so cute!"

On another vein of thought; as mentioned earlier in this summary, we never expected to see a father being petitioned by his son to let him have his turn playing with Roman Town again! This is the most perfect example of the appeal of the game, even for adults! 

Literally every parent gave the same response on their feedback forms about the popularity of the game.  They expressed how they were amazed to see so much information and have learned so much about archaeology.  As one parent expressed, "It was like going to an amusement park with so many things to see and do.  You want to get a yearly pass to keep coming back to enjoy more, both familiar and new things not yet experienced."

As we were going over our feedback forms and all of the video tapes, we determined that Roman Town undoubtedly was a one of the favorites products the consumers were evaluating. Roman Town passed this segment of our evaluation without hindrance in any manner.

When you consider how it so effectively stimulated the attention of both the children and adults, it was clearly an excellent learning medium. Just as the very best PC video game products of the past which have made it into the ranks of products inducted here, Roman Town has a well balanced compilation of content to stimulate not just a child's mind, but their emotions as well. Roman Town provides a substantial contribution to critical and cognitive skill development which will encourage repetitive use, essential learning, and skill development.

Roman Town stimulates critical skill development in a child in a rather subtle approach as they are being stimulated on multiple fronts simultaneously. The more a child experiences the game and applies what they are learning from the content on the screen, there is a constant level of further advancement in many of the most important areas of a child's developmental skills.  Roman Town pulls a perfect score of [5] in this category for CONTENT QUALITY.

CRITICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Rating Level - [5] an image of 4.5 gold  stars

Roman Town provides a substantial contribution to critical and cognitive skill development that sets it apart from many other products of similar nature. With the children multi-tasking by watching the illustrations and animations simultaneously, Roman Town contributes so much to a child's developmental skills that the word "substantial" doesn't even do it justice.  Roman Town is quite impressive in this evaluation category and pulls through with a perfects score of [5] in this category for CRITICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT.

Roman Town really made a strong impression in this category for EDUCATIONAL VALUE. In all consumer hands-on evaluation as well as in-house and independent evaluation, Roman Town was seen as a source of creative stimulation which envelopes a child's experience on multiple levels.

Roman Town establishes a clear-cut example of educational value with the different perspective of combining a vast wealth of information on Archaeology with use of a reciprocal teaching method. This engages the attention of the player fully with an absolute of stronger level of retention of what has been learned for future use in the game.  After discussion with our independent evaluators and in-house evaluators it was determined that Roman Town easily fulfills the standard educational demands that people are looking for in a educational PC game such as this.

There are multiple perspectives with which to look at what is the definition of Roman Town's contribution to educational value. After reviewing all evaluation results and independent evaluator reports, Roman Town pulls a perfect score of [5] in this category for EDUCATIONAL VALUE.

MARKETABILITY: Rating Level - [5] an image of 4.5 gold  stars

The marketability with Roman Town presented an interesting task to establish a fair and accurate final score. In the video tapes and what we witnessed personally in the hands-on evaluation segment, Roman Town proved its worth to us. The challenge that you have to face is that the corporate buyers are not always so detailed in their evaluations. Everything seems always to be in a rush.

What this amounts to is that corporate buyers have more of a challenge determining which educational PC games are the best way to go. Well established branding of quality and effectiveness, as well as excellent marketing development is needed to take a product all the way to the top. Despite the challenge, after extended deliberation in our examining all reports, scores, and video tapes, Roman Town demonstrated it is the right elements to pull its weight in scoring in the category for MARKETABILITY. In our final tally of scores in the category for MARKETABILITY, Roman Town comes in with a well above perfect score of [5] in this evaluation category .

RESPONSE LEVEL: Rating Level - [5] an image of 5 gold  stars

The response level for kids with Roman Town is pretty well what we all expected. There was no question in any manner that Roman Town captures the full attention of the children as intended and creates a clear and well defined response level of the highest level. The response level in all hands-on evaluations by children and family members were well beyond the norm and constant at all times. Children were literally engrossed in the imagery and interaction while putting it to task using the mouse to click, move, and respond simultaneously with their viewing the instructions or activity on the PC screen.. Roman Town pulls a perfect score of [5] in this category for RESPONSE LEVEL.

OVERALL VISUAL APPEAL: Rating Level - [4] an image of 4 gold  stars

The visual appeal for Roman Town is far from lacking. The product packaging was quite captivating and the games content was such a perfect balance of labors and educational value. The colors and images draw the full attention of the target age group it is designed for while at the same time capturing the attention of the adults as well. Roman Town passed this category for VISUAL APPEAL with a perfect score of [5].
